The 100 years war were a series of battles between England and France. The war actually lasted for 116 years starting in 1337 with many successful English incursions taking over vast areas of France and ending in 1453 with the English pushed back and retaining only a toehold of territory in France, around the Channel Port of Calais.

who was joan of arc?
Joan of Arc was one of the most famous personalities in French History and world history. She became famous at a very young age. She was from a poor background in France and was fiercely patriotic and angry that her country had been invaded by the English. She reported being visited by angels who encouraged her to meet the exiled French King - Charles and tell him to attack the city of Orleans . Joan managed to convince Charles and managed to take part herself in the successful battle for Orleans. However, she was subsequently captured by the English and put on trial for witchcraft and dressing like a man. She was burned at the stake aged only 19. However, France would ultimately win and Joan would go on be made a saint by the Catholic church in 1920 and a source of encouragement when France was in danger.
